Hi Chuck,
To check to rear brake shoes, the rear wheel has to be removed from the bike.
You will have to devise some system to safely support the bike. There have been postings here about a home made wooden stand that fits against the frame under the engine. I use a trolly jack under the engine to lift the bike then place an axle stand under each footrest to stop the bike falling over. Another way is to invert in a bike stand.
Once the bike is safely supported with its weight taken by the stand and not the wheels, the rear wheel removal and rear brake inspection is straightforward.
1. remove axle nut
2. loosen drive belt adjusting nuts
3. withdraw axle shaft
4. take drive belt off pully
5. remove rear wheel complete with rear brake.
The brake can now be cleaned out. Watch out for the brake dust in the drum. Don't breath it in. I recommend removing and greesing the shaft with the cam on that moves the brakeshoes. Be sparing with the greese - you don't want any on the friction surfaces for obvious reasons ! To do a full job, remove the real brake pedel and lubricate it's pivot, then oil the brake cables. Two brake cables - one to the brake and one to the stop switch.
Assembly is the reversal of the removal instructions. Make sure the protrusion on the swing arm is located in the groove on the brake panel. Also make sure the belt is adjusted. I think the belt should be adjusted according to the Suzuki manual. Other people think the belt should be a lot slacker than this. There have been loads of postings on this subject, so you make up your own mind !
Happy Savage riding,
Andrew
